Fizzing Science Easter Eggs - let's have fun coloring eggs!
by: Priyanka Raha ~4/2/2026

The History of the East Egg
The Easter egg tradition is all about new life and springtime, mixing old seasonal customs with Christian traditions. Back in the day, people weren’t allowed to eat eggs during Lent, so they ended up with a bunch left over. To keep them from going bad, they’d boil them, decorate them, and then share them as treats; often giving them to kids or people in need on Easter Sunday.

You will need:

  • baking soda
  • vinegar
  • a container for each color
  • Kool-Aid packets
  • hard boiled eggs

Cover the bottom of a container with baking soda.
Add a packet of Kool-Aid to the baking soda and mix well.
Place an egg in the center of the baking soda and Kool-Aid mixture.
Pour vinegar over the mixture and watch what happens!
The vinegar (acid) reacts with the baking soda (base) causing it to “explode” or “erupt” and foam up over the egg.
