Buzzers, Brains, and Big Moments: Recapping the PopSmart Science Bowl

How a Room Full of Curious Kids Reminded Us Why We Do This

There is a particular kind of electricity in a room full of young scientists who have prepared, who care, and who are ready. On May 30, 2026, that electricity filled the Hampton Inn and Suites in Redmond, Washington, as elementary and middle school students gathered for the PopSmart Science Bowl — four hours of rapid-fire science, nervous energy, deep focus, and genuine joy.

The day was a reminder of what happens when curious young minds are given a real stage: they rise to meet it.

How the Day Unfolded

The competition ran from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm with separate rounds for each division, ensuring every competitor faced peers at their own level. Students moved through a few rounds that tested depth of knowledge, followed by a high-energy buzzer round where they competed head-to-head — rapid-fire questions, real pressure, no hiding. Across both divisions, the four subject areas were physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science.

Physics tested their ability to reason through forces, energy, and motion. Chemistry asked them to think at a molecular scale. Biology covered everything from cells to ecosystems. Earth science grounded the competition in the planet beneath their feet and the atmosphere above their heads. Together, the four disciplines painted a picture of science as it actually is: interconnected, wide-ranging, and endlessly fascinating.

Congratulations to Our Champions

After a full morning of competition, two students rose to the top of their divisions.

Elementary Division Champion: Tanmay

Tanmay’s performance across both rounds was exceptional — quick, focused, and calm under pressure. Exactly the qualities that great scientists carry with them long after any competition ends.

Middle School Division Champion: Rhea

Rhea brought both precision and composure to one of the most demanding divisions of the day, demonstrating mastery across all four subjects. A truly impressive performance and a well-deserved championship.

Certificates of participation were awarded to every student who competed. In a Science Bowl, showing up and putting your knowledge on the line is itself a victory — and every single participant did exactly that.

Surprise for the Parents

The fun didn't stop with the students. In the spirit of keeping everyone in the room on their toes, we surprised the parents with a buzzer quiz of their own. Parents stepped up, buzzed in, and proved that science curiosity runs in the family. The winners walked away with PopSmart Academy tee shirts, and the whole room walked away with a little extra energy and a lot of laughter. It was one of those unscripted moments that made the day feel less like a competition and more like a community.

Three Things We Want Every Student to Remember

Before the awards were handed out, we took a moment to speak to the students directly. Instead of sharing tips on scores and technique, we spoke about bigger and bolder things, about the kind of scientists and people we hope they are becoming.
Here is what we shared.

1. Question Everything

Be curious. Ask questions about how things work, why they work that way, and what happens if you change them. Curiosity is what drives discovery, not just in science, but in every field that has ever moved the world forward.

The students in that room did not prepare for a Science Bowl by passively absorbing facts. They prepared by wondering. By asking “why” one more time than felt comfortable. That habit of not accepting the surface answer, of digging deeper, is something we hope they carry into every classroom, every conversation, and every problem they encounter for the rest of their lives.

"Curiosity is more than a personality trait. It is a practice. And every question you ask makes you better at it."

2. Build Things. Fail. Build Again.

Build things. Build useless things. Build things that might fall apart. Feel frustrated when they do. And then build again.

This is a true description of how science actually works. Every experiment that “failed” in this competition was a data point. Every buzzer answer that turned out to be wrong was a lesson that will stick far longer than a correct answer easily given.

Real learning lives in the gap between what you expected and what actually happened. We told our students: you have got to fail. It is uncomfortable and it is necessary, and the students who keep building after the frustration are the ones who eventually build something extraordinary.

3. Read, With Purpose, and Just for the Joy of It

Read with purpose sometimes, but also read just to read. Read things that surprise you, that make you think, that take you somewhere new.

The best science minds we know are also readers of everything. Fiction builds empathy. History builds context. Reading widely is how you develop the kind of cross-disciplinary thinking that sees connections others miss. A student who loves biology and also reads about ancient civilizations and science fiction is not distracted. They are building the mental architecture that original thinking requires.

We asked every student to leave that room with a book in mind they have been meaning to read. Not a textbook. Just a book.

"Read things that surprise you. That is where your best thinking begins."

Thank You

None of this happens without a community that believes in what we are building. Deep gratitude to our sponsors J K Phairow who generously captured wondrous moments from the event. Thank you to the coaches and instructors who prepared these students with care, to the families who showed up, and above all to the students themselves: for preparing, for competing, and for reminding everyone in that room why this work matters. Last but not the least, thank you to the incredible team at PopSmart Academy for bringing this event to life.

Until Next Time

The PopSmart Science Bowl is more than a competition. It is a room full of young people who chose to take their curiosity seriously — to study hard, show up, and test themselves against something real.

Congratulations to Tanmay, Rhea, and every student who competed on May 30th. Question everything. Keep building. Keep reading. Stay curious. 🌱
